OPC Foundation Releases UAFX Series Specifications: A Breakthrough in Field-Level Communication Standardization

OPC UA Field eXchange (UAFX) is a set of OPC UA specifications for field-level communication, commonly referred to as OPC UA FX or UAFX. As an extension of the OPC UA communication standard, it enables the exchange of process and configuration data between automation components from different vendors.

In November 2022, the OPC Foundation officially released the first OPC UA Field eXchange (UAFX) series specifications, marking a major milestone in the four-year Field Level Communications (FLC) initiative. Having undergone rigorous member review and cross-vendor prototype validation, these specifications establish a unified standard for industrial field device interoperability and are now ready for commercial deployment.

Core Components of the Specifications

The UAFX series consists of four technical modules, comprehensively addressing data exchange and system configuration needs:

  • Framework (OPC 10000-80): Defines the core architecture for field-level communication.

  • Information Model (OPC 10000-81): Establishes a universal data standard for factory/process automation.

  • Network Services (OPC 10000-82): Provides critical functions such as topology discovery and time synchronization.

  • Controller Profile (OPC 10000-84): Specifies conformance implementation requirements.

This release lays the foundation for future extensions, including Controller-to-Device (C2D), Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, and specialized specifications for motion control applications.

Multi-Vendor Interoperability Demonstration

At the 2022 SPS Expo, the OPC Foundation collaborated with 26 industry leaders, including ABB, Siemens, and Schneider Electric, to showcase the first-ever multi-vendor UAFX demonstration platform. The system achieved:

  • Real-time data exchange via UDP/IP over Ethernet TSN/5G networks

  • Centralized visual monitoring

  • Seamless cross-brand Controller-to-Controller (C2C) communication
A key enabler was the UAFX Connection Manager software provided by Siemens and Unified Automation.

Industry Leader Insights

  • Peter Lutz, FLC Director: "The specifications are now deployment-ready, with conformance testing set to begin soon."

  • Thomas Brandl, Bosch Rexroth: "The breakthrough was made possible through collaboration among 320 experts from 65 companies worldwide."

  • Stefan Hoppe, OPC Foundation President: "UAFX fills a critical gap in control-layer communication standards, accelerating Industry 4.0 adoption."

About the FLC Initiative

Since its launch in 2018, the initiative has been supported by 27 steering committee members, including ABB, Huawei, and Intel, with working groups continuously expanding OPC UA's applications in deterministic communication, functional safety, and beyond. All OPC members are now eligible to participate in technical development.

Key Translation Considerations:

  1. Technical Accuracy: Ensured precise translation of industry terms (e.g., "现场层通信" → "field-level communication").

  2. Conciseness: Streamlined repetitive descriptions while retaining key details.

  3. Natural Flow: Adjusted sentence structures for smoother readability in English.

  4. Formatting Consistency: Maintained bullet points and headings for clarity.

  5. Cultural Adaptation: Used internationally recognized terms (e.g., "工业4.0" → "Industry 4.0").

This version ensures clarity, professionalism, and technical precision for an English-speaking industrial audience.
